You paid around Rs.9,000 for a head unit the seller swore was "octa-core, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 2K display." It felt like a steal. Three weeks later it reboots itself while you are crawling through stop-go traffic, the map freezes for four seconds every time you pinch to zoom, and the screen starts registering taps you never made. You did not get a bad unit. You got a faked-spec unit, and almost nobody in the shop will tell you how common this is.

Here is the part that makes it nasty: the spec screen inside the stereo is just text the software is told to display. A vendor can edit the firmware so the "About device" page reads 8GB RAM and an octa-core CPU while the actual chip inside is a weak quad-core with 2GB. As Team-BHP's car-entertainment forum has documented at length, Android head units routinely fake their hardware specifications, and the on-screen numbers prove nothing.

This is how to catch the lie before you pay, the three-minute test to run after, and where the spec is actually real.

The three things that get faked

RAM. The oldest trick is dressing up virtual RAM as physical RAM. A unit advertised as "8GB" might be 2GB of real RAM plus 6GB of "virtual RAM," which is just compressed swap sitting on slow storage. It looks great on the box and collapses the moment you run navigation, music and Android Auto together. The symptom is exactly what owners report: stutter, apps getting killed in the background, and spontaneous reboots when you multitask.

Storage. A unit sold as 64GB can carry a 16GB or 32GB chip with the partition table edited to report the bigger number. It shows 64GB in settings, but write data past the real capacity and it silently corrupts. Your offline maps and saved music quietly break.

The processor. This is the one that actually decides whether the unit feels smooth, and it is the one sellers are most evasive about. RAM gets the marketing; the SoC does the work. Cheap boxes hide behind a generic "octa-core" claim while running an entry-level chip with no real grunt. The single best filter in the whole market: if the seller cannot tell you the exact processor name and model, walk away.

Before you pay: three questions that end the conversation fast

  1. "What is the exact processor?" You want a model name, not "octa-core." A seller of a real unit can answer instantly. Evasion is the answer.
  2. "Is that 4GB physical RAM, or total with virtual?" You want physical. If they fumble between "total RAM" and "RAM," that is the zRAM trick.
  3. "Brand warranty, in writing, with the GST bill?" A no-name unit with a verbal "1 year guarantee" and no bill is the profile that gets faked. A documented brand has its real specs published and a warranty channel that exists.

After you pay: the three-minute test, done inside your return window

Do not trust the settings screen. Verify the silicon directly, the same week you buy, while you can still return it.

  • Real CPU and RAM: install CPU-Z, AIDA64, or DevCheck from the Play Store on the head unit. These read the hardware through the kernel instead of the vendor's edited "About" page. Compare what they report against what you were sold. A mismatch on core count, chip name, or physical RAM means the unit is faked.
  • Real storage: run a storage benchmark like AndroBench. A genuine eMMC chip posts sane sequential write speeds; a faked or worn chip reports junk numbers or fails the write test. If you want to be thorough, fill the claimed storage with files and read them back, corrupted reads expose a fake capacity.
  • The multitask stress test: open offline Google Maps navigation, start music, and connect Android Auto or CarPlay at the same time. Drive ten minutes. A real 4GB unit holds all three. A fake reboots, kills an app, or stutters. That reboot in traffic is the spec lie showing itself.

The tells no spec sheet will ever show you

Two of these matter more in June than any other month, because a parked Indian car cabin crosses 60 degrees and a cheap head unit has no heatsink and nowhere to vent.

  • Summer heat shutdown: a thin no-name unit packed into a tight dash with no ventilation overheats and shuts off in peak afternoon sun. Brand units with proper thermal design ride it out.
  • Ghost touch: phantom taps and menus opening on their own usually mean a cheap capacitive digitizer or a bad ground, made worse by heat. It rarely fixes itself.
  • GPS drift and Bluetooth drops: the cheap units cut corners on the GPS and BT modules, so your location lags a block behind and your phone disconnects mid-call. None of this is on the spec sheet.

Where the spec is actually real

The fix is not "spend the most." It is "buy where the numbers are published, the processor is named, and a warranty channel exists." A few honest picks by budget:

The option nobody in the shop suggests

If your car already has a decent factory touchscreen, you may not need an Android box at all. Can a fake unit pass CPU-Z too? A determined faker can spoof some readings, but faking AIDA64, a storage benchmark, and the live multitask test all at once is far harder than editing one settings page. Run all three; the fakes fall apart on the stress test.

Is more RAM always better? Only if it is real physical RAM paired with a capable processor. A genuine 4GB on a good SoC outperforms a "8GB" box running a weak chip and swap.

What screen size for an Indian hatchback or sedan? 9-inch is the sweet spot for most cars. Go to 10.1 or 12.3-inch only if your dash and budget allow, and never trade a good processor for a bigger panel.
