You spend two weeks choosing speakers. You compare models, read reviews, argue about budget, and finally pay for a specific set.
Then you hand over the keys, come back four hours later, and the music sounds good. The door trim is back on, the panels are flush, nothing rattles. You drive away happy.
At no point did you see what went into the doors. And from that afternoon onward, you never will again, because getting a look would mean pulling the trim off a car that now works fine.
That is the whole problem, and it has almost nothing to do with dishonest people. It is a structural gap: the verification window for an accessory install is the install itself, and most buyers spend that window sitting in a waiting area looking at their phone.
Substitution risk tracks exactly one thing
Not the price of the component. Not the brand. Whether you can see it after the job is done.

Read the bottom of that table again. The single most substitutable item in a car audio install is the one nobody thinks of as a component at all.
The wire is the easiest swap in the business
Two cables can look identical, both copper-coloured, both the same thickness, and differ by more than half in cost and meaningfully in performance.
The difference is OFC, oxygen-free copper, versus CCA, copper-clad aluminium. CCA is an aluminium conductor with a thin copper skin, typically only around 10 to 15 percent copper by volume. Copper conducts roughly 40 percent better than aluminium, so at the same gauge, CCA carries about 1.6 times the resistance of OFC. To match the current capacity of an OFC run you generally need to go up about two gauge sizes in CCA, which means a 4-gauge CCA cable behaves closer to a 6 or even 8-gauge OFC one despite looking the same from outside.
Under load that shows up as voltage drop and heat. The amplifier you paid for never receives the current it was specified to draw, so it quietly underperforms and clips earlier than it should. CCA is also more brittle, corrodes faster in Indian humidity, and does not take solder reliably, which matters for every joint in the run.
To be fair to installers: CCA is not fraud. It is a legitimate, cheaper material, and on a short run at a sensible gauge it is perfectly serviceable. Plenty of honest shops use it and price accordingly.
The problem is narrower and specific. It is being quoted and charged for OFC and given CCA. It is a power run to a boot-mounted amplifier sized as though it were copper when it is not. It is paying premium-install prices for a Rs.45,000 system fed by the cheapest cable on the shelf, buried under carpet where the choice becomes permanent and unauditable the moment the sill trim clips back down.
What else hides behind the trim
Speakers. The classic. A pair of well-known component speakers on the invoice, something unbranded in the door. Once the trim is on, the only evidence is how it sounds, and most buyers have nothing to compare it against. If the sound is a clear improvement on the factory paper cones, which almost anything is, the swap goes unnoticed indefinitely.
Damping sheets. This one is not about identity, it is about quantity. You pay for coverage of four doors and the boot. What actually goes on might be half that, applied thinly in the easy areas. Crossovers and mounting. Component sets ship with passive crossovers that need somewhere sensible to live. A rushed job leaves them dangling inside the door cavity, where they get wet and rattle. Nobody will ever see this either.
Fuses and connectors. The fused distribution block, the ring terminals, the inline fuse on a power run. All invisible, all cheap to downgrade, all the difference between a safe install and a fire risk.
LED bulbs. Semi-visible at best. Once a bulb is seated in a sealed housing you cannot read the model or the wattage, and a lower-output bulb from the same family looks identical from the driving seat until you drive somewhere genuinely dark.
Before the job: the invoice is the contract
Everything gets easier if the paperwork is specific before any tool comes out.
Ask for a GST invoice or a written quote that lists every component by make and model, on its own line, with labour separate. Where a component has a serial, ask for it on the invoice.
"Complete audio setup, Rs.45,000" is not an invoice. It is a receipt for an unspecified object, and it makes every later question unanswerable, including a warranty claim. A brand honours a warranty against a model and a serial, not against your memory of a conversation.

On the day: four checks, about five minutes total
You do not need to hover over the job. You need to be present at four specific moments.
- Watch the boxes get opened. Sealed retail packaging, opened in front of you. Genuine Pioneer packaging carries a hologram and a serial-numbered warranty card. Focal components carry serial numbers. - Ask to see the door before the trim goes back. This is the moment the window closes. One look, one photo per door: the speaker sitting in its mount, the damping applied, the wiring routed and secured. Any competent installer will show you without hesitation, because it is also their proof they did the job properly.
- Ask what wire went in. OFC or CCA, and what gauge. There is a correct answer for your run length and current draw, and there is no correct answer to a blank look.
Ask for your old parts back
The simplest check on this list, and almost nobody does it.
When something is removed from your car, ask to have it. The factory speakers that came out of the doors. The halogen bulbs the LEDs replaced. The original head unit.
Ask at the start, not at the end, so nothing is thrown away in good faith. Then either keep them, which is genuinely useful if you ever sell the car and want to return it to standard, or hand them straight back.
The value is not the parts. It is that the request makes the removal visible. An installer who produces four factory speakers has demonstrably taken four factory speakers out. It costs nothing, it is a normal request in ethical auto repair everywhere, and it changes the shape of the afternoon.
After the fact, what you can still verify
If the trim is already back on, you have not lost everything.
- Register the warranty. Brands that offer serial-based registration will tell you whether that serial is a real one from their production. This is a genuine authentication check disguised as paperwork.

- Check voltage at the amplifier. If an amp is fed by undersized or CCA cable, the voltage at its terminals sags under load. A multimeter and ten minutes will tell you what the invoice would not.
- Pull one door card. If you genuinely suspect a swap, one door answers the question. It is an hour of labour, and it is worth it before a warranty period expires rather than after.

Being straight about the economics, because the framing matters.
Most substitution is not a plan. It is what happens when a shop is beaten down on price and still has to make the job work. If a customer negotiates a fitment quote to a number that does not cover proper cable and proper time, something has to give, and it gives in the places that are about to become invisible. The buyer who pushes hardest on price is frequently the one who gets the cheapest wire, and neither party ever discusses it.
So the honest advice is two-sided. Verify the install, and also pay for the install. A quote that itemises OFC cable of the right gauge, proper terminations and real damping coverage will not be the cheapest quote you get, and it should not be.
