Your Footwell RGB Is Legal. Your Underbody Glow Is Not: What CMVR Rule 108 Actually Says About Car Ambient Lighting in India, and the Wiring Mistake That Starts Fires (2026)

Search whether ambient lighting is legal on an Indian car and you will find a wall of articles telling you it is not. Most of them cite Rule 104 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules as the authority.

Rule 104 is about the fitment of reflectors. It has nothing to do with the colour of your interior lighting. The rule that actually governs light colour is Rule 108, and Rule 108 says something the copied articles never mention: it does not apply to the internal lighting of the vehicle.

That single exemption changes the answer for most people reading this. Footwell strips, door inserts, dashboard glow and a lit-up cabin are not what the rule prohibits. Underbody neon is a completely different matter. This article draws the line properly, then covers the thing that actually goes wrong with these kits in India, which is not a challan.

The short answer

Lighting that lives inside your cabin and stays inside your cabin is not prohibited by Rule 108. Lighting that projects outward, is mounted on the exterior, or effectively shows a red light to the front or a non-red light to the rear, is.

Blue is the colour to avoid anywhere it can be seen from outside, because blue is tied to emergency vehicles.

The bigger practical risk for an Indian owner is not enforcement. It is a cheap unfused strip spliced onto a permanent live wire.

What Rule 108 actually says

Rule 108 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 is titled "Use of red, white or blue light". Sub-rule (1) reads:

"No motor vehicle shall show a red light to the front or light other than red to rear"

Read that carefully, because the wording is narrower than people assume. It is a rule about what your vehicle shows, forward and backward, to other road users. It is a signalling rule. Red to the front is banned because red to the front is what an oncoming driver reads as a rear lamp. Non-red to the rear is banned for the same reason in reverse.

The sub-rule then carries a list of things it does not apply to. That list includes:

  • Internal lighting of the vehicle
  • Amber direction indicators, and top lights on vehicles operating at airports, ports, mines and project sites
  • Blinker type red light with purple glass fitted to an ambulance van
  • White light illuminating the rear number plate
  • White light used while reversing
  • Plough lights on agricultural tractors during field operations

Sub-rule (4) is the one people vaguely remember as "coloured lights are banned". What it actually says is that the use of multi-coloured red, blue and white light is permitted only on vehicles specifically designated for emergency and disaster management duties as specified by the Central Government. The old proviso that let vehicles escorting high dignitaries run blue lights was removed by notification dated 1 May 2017, which is the change that ended the red beacon culture.

So the structure is: a signalling rule about front and rear light colour, an explicit carve-out for internal lighting, and a reservation of the red-blue-white combination for emergency services.

The line that matters is inside versus visible outside

Every install falls on one side of this line. Here is where the common ones sit.

The door projector case deserves a note, because we sell one and it would be convenient to simply declare it legal. The honest position is that it is reasoning from the rule rather than settled case law: the lamp is white, it operates only when a door is open with the vehicle stationary, and it projects downward onto the ground rather than showing a light to the front or rear of a moving vehicle. That is a defensible reading. It is not a court ruling.

Colour is the second variable

Once you are inside the cabin, colour still matters, for two reasons.

Red toward the front. A bright red strip along the top of the dashboard, glowing out through the windscreen at night, is the one interior choice that can genuinely put you back inside sub-rule (1). The whole point of the rule is that nothing should show red forward. Keep red out of anything that faces the windscreen.

Blue anywhere visible. Blue is the colour associated with emergency vehicles, and sub-rule (4) reserves the red, blue and white combination for designated emergency and disaster management vehicles. Blue footwell lighting that never leaves the cabin is not what that sub-rule targets, but blue is the colour most likely to attract an officer's attention and the least worth arguing about. If you want blue, keep it low and out of sight from outside.

Amber, warm white, soft green and purple in a footwell are the least contentious choices. This is the same logic that governs what you can legally fit on the outside of the car, which we covered for auxiliary light bars and aftermarket fog lamps.

Where the text and the roadside disagree

Being realistic about this matters more than being technically right.

The exemption is in the rule. It is also true that a traffic officer at a night checkpoint is not going to work through the provisos of Rule 108 with you. What they see is a glowing car. Enforcement of vehicle lighting in India is officer-level and inconsistent, and lighting challans are commonly cited at Rs.500 for a first offence and Rs.1,500 for subsequent ones, though the amount varies by state and by which provision gets applied.

There is a second exposure worth knowing. A modification that changes the vehicle from the specification it was registered with engages Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, with Section 182A providing a penalty of Rs.5,000 per alteration. That is the same provision we walked through in detail for bull bars. A reversible internal light strip is a very different proposition from a welded external structure, but if you have wired something permanently into the loom, you have made a change to the vehicle.

The practical takeaway: interior lighting that is discreet, non-red at the front, and not visible as a coloured glow from outside gives you both the rule and a quiet life. Something that turns your car into a moving light show gives you an argument you might win eventually and would rather not have.

The real risk is the wiring, not the challan

This is the part the accessory listings never cover, and it is the part that actually damages cars.

A cheap LED strip is a length of adhesive tape with LEDs and current-limiting resistors on it. On the badly made ones the resistors run hot, their values drift as they heat, and the LEDs start receiving more voltage than they should. Insulation is thin, connectors are poor, and there is usually no safety certification of any kind. That is a component you are about to hide inside the dashboard of a car that sits in Indian summer heat.

Then comes the install. The failure pattern is consistent:

  • Tapped straight to the battery, with no ignition or accessory switching, so the strip is live whenever the car is parked.
  • No inline fuse, so a short anywhere along a three metre strip has the full current capability of a car battery behind it.
  • No relay, so the load is carried by whatever circuit the installer found convenient, often one never designed for it.
  • Scotch-lock splices into the factory loom, which cut through insulation and corrode, and which are the same practice that ruins head unit installs.

A car battery can deliver hundreds of amps into a dead short. The fuse is not a formality, it is the entire safety system. An unfused strip run under carpet and behind trim is a fire path, and it is hidden where you cannot see it developing.

How a decent install is wired

Four things to insist on. Any competent installer will do these without being asked, and an installer who argues about them is telling you something useful.

  1. An inline fuse on the positive feed, sized to the strip, typically in the 5A to 10A range for interior lighting. Fitted close to the power source, not close to the strip.
  2. A relay if the load is meaningful, so the switching circuit is not carrying the current and the factory wiring is not being asked to do a job it was not designed for.
  3. Power from an accessory or ignition-switched source, not a permanent live. Better still for footwell lighting, take the trigger from the door or dome light circuit so the lights come up when a door opens and go off with the car. This is what experienced owners on the Indian forums settle on after living with a permanently powered RGB kit for a few months.
  4. Proper terminations. Soldered or crimped joints with heat shrink, not scotch-locks into the OEM loom. Strips secured so they cannot work loose behind the dash and land on a hot surface or a moving pedal.

Ask for the fuse rating and where it sits. If the answer is vague, that is your signal.

Will it drain the battery?

Only if it is wired to a permanent live, which is exactly why the accessory-switched feed above matters.

LEDs themselves draw very little. The problem is never the lights, it is the controller and the wiring choice. Bluetooth and app-controlled kits keep a receiver awake waiting for a connection, and a receiver on a permanent live will sit there drawing current for as long as the car is parked. Add that to the other things quietly drawing power in a modern car and a fortnight at the airport parking lot becomes a jump start.

There is a warranty dimension too. Cutting into the factory loom is the kind of work that gives a dealer something to point at, which we mapped out in the warranty void framework. The short version is that a dealer can decline a claim on the system the installer interfered with, not on the whole car, and clean wiring is what keeps that conversation short.

What we would actually fit

If the goal is a car that looks considered rather than decorated:

  • Footwell lighting, single colour, door triggered. Warm white or amber. It makes the cabin feel finished, it genuinely helps you find things at night without the harsh dome light, and it is the least contentious install in every sense.
  • Fiber optic door and dash edge lighting if you want the modern OEM look. Low output, hides in panel gaps, no bright point sources in your peripheral vision while driving.

  • Skip underbody kits, exterior strips, anything red facing forward, and any kit whose selling point is that it flashes in time with music. A flashing coloured light on a moving vehicle is the thing every lighting rule in the world is written to prevent.

One more thing worth saying plainly: brightness is what separates a car that looks premium from one that looks like a phone shop. OEM ambient lighting is far dimmer than people expect. If your footwell lighting is casting shadows on the roof lining, it is turned up too far, and at night it costs you real night vision on unlit roads.
